When we think of the infinite nature of possibility, we rarely believe it. We imagine that everything is finite, linear--like us. But that's not the truth. The truth has no such limits. As a result, we humans--who struggle with freedom--prefer the comfort of cages built around lies. In order to create and maintain order out of the chaos of infinite possibility, we apply these lies (also known as "labels") to the things we cannot control. Verbal and ideological boxes. Before we are even born, these boxes are built for us by well-meaning family and friends, as well as total strangers. If you're a girl, you'll be put in pink and wearing dresses. If you're a boy, blue and overalls. People buy girls dolls and boys, footballs. A child will learn that such colors, styles and objects are associated with who they are before even being able to form a single syllable.
We grow up within social structures created for us and are thereby conditioned for the expected. It makes us feel safe. Gives us the illusion of permanency, a lie that helps us to feel secure over the unpredictability behind the truth. However, it is in the element of surprise the best things in life may be found, "love" being chief among them.
Love is truth. And it happens in the most unexpected spaces. In the places we do not necessarily see or even understand. We think of love as that moment our eyes meet--like in the movies. But love is something deeper. It's a spark, smoldering until it becomes a flame. That flame, if nurtured, will rise into a blaze of roaring fire that can never be extinguished--not even by the darkness that follows all lies.
Love is the light and warmth of the world. Love is humanity's miracle. It's my miracle. And yours, too.
No one likes unexpected bills. Unexpected problems and illnesses are equally unwelcome. But unexpected love? Welcome it with open arms. For, when you have real love, there is no problem you can't overcome. Even in the face of illness, you can find peace, knowing you are loved. Bills? Love provides a partner to help you survive this upside-down world, where paper is more important than people.
When unexpected love finds it's way to your heart, reluctance is a common response. And yet, that smolder...that spark. It doesn't quit. You'll find that, in time, neither will you.
When someone quits on love, that person carries regret for the rest of their life. But the person who doesn't quit? Like a beacon, love will find its way to them. Across space, time, and whole oceans. Believe in love and it will come for you, to you. One way or another.
As a writer, I've dreamt up whole love stories that span lifetimes. Yet, nothing I could ever imagine is greater than the unfolding of real love. The true kind. The kind you can't see coming, won't see coming, and, could very well miss if you aren't paying attention.
So, pay attention! The unexpected may be just around the corner....
*This essay was written in memory of my Irish Ma, who died on this day nine years ago, and who showed me how to live and love with unparalleled fierceness--a fierceness that has saved my life more times than I can count.
Gra go deo, Ma....
By The Corrs
She lived like she knew nothing lasts
Didn't care to look like anyone else
And she was beautiful, so beautiful
I still hear her laugh like she's here
Shower it down on all the young
It isn't so wrong to have such fun
Forever
Angel
I hope they love you like we do
Forever
Angel
I'll be proud to be like you
Be like you
Does the sun shine up at you when you're looking down
Do you get along with the others around
It's gotta be better than before
You don't need to worry now you're gone
Forever
Angel
I hope they love you like we do
Forever
Angel
I'll be proud to be like you
Be like you
Just like you
And when I go to sleep at night
I'll thank you for each blessed thing surrounding me
For every fall I'll ever break
Each moment's breath I wanna taste
Confidence and conscience
Decadent extravagance
Neverending providence
For loving when I had the chance
Angel
I hope they love you like we do
Forever
Angel
I'll be proud to be like you
Forever
Angel
I'll be proud to be like you
Be like you
I'll be proud to be like you
