The cast is lead by Tyler Posey, who plays Scott McCall, the omega werewolf without a pack. Posey isn't your average teen heart-throb with his off-set jaw and crooked nose. Which is part of his appeal. But there's no sign of the intelligence assigned to Posey's "teen wolf" at the end of Season Two, where McCall outwits almost all of the older, more experienced characters through slight-of-hand and a boy-scout like preparedness that would have surely earned him a wolf-shaped badge in the "real" world. Crystal Reed plays Scott's love interest, Allison Argent--that's right, "argent" means silver. And werewolves can't tolerate the precious, oh-so shiny metal. Instant star-crossed lovers! Can you say, "teen angst"???
Outside of the obvious cliches used throughout the series, it is a fun distraction--one fans will get 24 more episodes of in 2013. The really interesting dynamic comes in with Sharman; he is submissive to Derek's alpha...but for how long? Derek is played by 25-year old California-native,Tyler Hoechlin, most recognized for his role in the film Road to Perdition. The emergence of a new wolf, played by 24-year old, Colton Haynes, alludes to a shake-up in the wolf-pack dynamic that will occupy much of Season Three's attentions.
Haynes is one of the more recognizable actors on the show, having made appearances on Pushing Daisies, The Nine Lives of Chloe King,The Hills, Melrose Place, and CSI: Miami. Haynes also had a cameo on the big screen in the summer blockbuster, Transformers, and if you look closely, you might recognize Haynes from his work as an Abercrombie and Fitch model as well. An interesting aside: Haynes auditioned for the role of Edward Cullen in the Twilight film franchise; though I'm not sure I'd want to include that in my bio if I were Haynes...
And the question of the longevity of this movie spin-off? Next season is likely its last. The tip-off? The unusual 24-episode commitment for the third season. Standard seasons are about 12 episodes. Essentially a double-season, producers are giving the show an incredible push, hoping. Fingers crossed for the cast and crew that they can keep it going!
Haynes role as Jackson--the new wolf in the pack--is going to make for some tired storylines; he's already tried to assert his dominance before his stint as the lizard-like Kanima. The character is portrayed as an insecure jock with something to prove...I did say the show had obvious cliches, didn't I?
Dylan O'Brien plays the role of Stiles Stilinski, wingman to Posey's Scott McCall. O'Brien has good comedic timing; he was an unseasoned actor when he accepted the role in 2010. Today, the 21-year old Jersey-boy has three feature films added to what will surely be a growing list of acting credits. Like his co-star, Posey, O'Brien also spends time playing in his own band.
Holland Roden (please let that be your stage name...) plays Lidya Martin, a highly intelligent cheerleader possessed by the consciousness of a former alpha, and, O'Brien's love-interest on the show. The 24-year old actress received her degree in Women's Studies from UCLA, though the Dallas-native was clearly cut out for stardom. Roden's been acting since 2007 and has landed roles in award-winning series like Weeds, Lost, and Community--among many others.
All in all, TEEN WOLF is #PopCultureProfessor APPROVED with a generous 8.5/10, thanks to Hoechlin's incredible abs.
Hello? MTV? I'd like two tickets to Hoechlin's gun show, please. Sure, I'll hold.... ;)
