THE DETAILS
-We only accept titled, completed manuscripts in WORD format using Times New Roman font-size 12, double spaced with one-inch margins all around--just like a commercial publisher would expect. The Chicago Manual of Style is internationally recognised and recommended for all citations/references, but other reference styles are also formats we regularly work in (MLA, APA, etc.). We specialise in both British English and American English, depending on your market/audience.
The following guidelines are based on industry standards:
-Developmental/substantive (line-by-line) editing: 1-6 hours/page
-Copyediting (lots of red marks using Track Changes--this is the secondary stage, after content and references are relatively sound): 1-3 hours/page
-Proofreading (only performed on clean copies of fully edited mss): 30 minutes-1 hour/page
-Checking academic references and citations: 1-2 hours/page
-Poetry: 30 minutes-1 hour/page
Books of 200 pages or more require a minimum turnaround of 60 days for most editing projects. Proofreading books of 200 pages or more is a turnaround of about 6 weeks.
RATES:
$50/hour poetry and publishing consults
$65/hour for proofreading and checking references/citations
$85/hour for full book projects, including consults
Complete editing packages include substantive editing, copyediting and proofreading for 200+ page book projects and start at $5,000
While we can provide a general estimate on completed manuscripts, there may be unforeseen issues only detectable once the project is underway. It's recommended that you budget for at least 15% above the estimate. Additional pages, title changes, or other added materials after an estimate and/or an editing project has begun will require more time, which increases total cost. It's in the author's best interest to have a fully revised, completed manuscript prepared before submitting it for an estimate.
All editing contracts require a nonrefundable 50% deposit at signing--no exceptions.
Unless Dr. Housel's name is to be included on the cover of your book as the book editor (which requires a contract and share of royalties), authors and publishers may not use Dr. Housel's name to promote or sell their book projects prior to, during or after publication.
Dr. Housel has limited availability and is currently booking 3-6 months in advance for book projects of 200+ pages or more and 4-6 weeks in advance for poetry chapbooks, academic journal articles and/or book chapters.
