Ridiculous. I know. TRUE BLOOD is one of the best shows on television today. And I got to say that to Sam in person!
Sam and I hadn't yet met when he spoke about my book to a cowd of hundreds in 2010. Of course, I was thrilled to be there for him on Friday. We both arrived around 2:30pm EST that day and were both exhausted. While I was doing my vampire myth and supernatural-superhero legend show--just 30 minutes after my arrival--followed by an amazing Q&A with James Marsters, Sam, who had left LA at 4:30am PST to get to Philly, was meeting and greeting fans for photo opps and autographs. When he arrived in Room A of the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the audience went absolutely mad.
Sam Trammell was born in New Orleans; the 2010 Scream Award-nominated actor attended prestigious Brown University and University of Paris before starting his acting career in 1996. Since then, Trammell has acted in more than 14 films including Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. He's also been on popular television shows like House, which had its series finale in 2012, as well as CSI, Cold Case, and Showtime's Dexter. But this triple-threat True Blood co-star has also been in Tony-nominated Broadway shows! To say Sam Trammell is a busy man would be an understatement. So when I heard he'd taken the time to read my book, I was blown away.
Sam Trammell and co-star, Kristin Bauer van Straten, are pals; anyone who follows them on Twitter knows that. Trammell is also friendly with Joe Manganiello, appearing this month in Channing Tatum's film directed by Steven Soderbergh, Magic Mike.
Next week, we'll see Sam continue his hot romance with Luna in HBO's fifth season, starting on June 10th. He couldn't help but hint at the role Luna's daughter plays in the upcoming season as well as about the new lady-vamps hitting the scene. A big smile spread across his face as he also revealed that this season, Pam, or Bauer van Straten, looks hotter than ever!
Among the other revelations during his Q&A, Trammell spoke about how all the water scenes were shot in what was essentially a three-foot deep puddle but that, early in his career, he did shoot scenes in a legitimate swamp with real alligators and snapping turtles...while naked. He also revealed that though he loved Marshall Allman, the young man who played Tommy Mickens, Sam's half-brother, during certain scenes, Allmanm had a way of "getting under his skin." So when we see Sam's frustration on screen with Tommy from last season, it's authentic.
Sam's agent is a doll and so is Sam; we had a terrific conversation after the Q&A and Sam graciously accepted a copy of my book. He said he didn't own one, so it was fun to be able to give him one for the plane ride home. He was headed for more fan-interactions after our session and I was off to host Sam Witwer of SyFy's Being Human, one of my favorite people on the planet. Now THAT would be a GREAT addition to TRUE BLOOD's cast of characters: a new vampire played by Witwer!
Having read all of Charlaine's books (who Trammell adores, calling her "a real nice Southern lady"), I'd say that Witwer would be terrific as Alexei Romanov or Felipe de Castro. Witwer and Trammell have actually acted in several of the same television shows. It would be a fun pop culture mythology-match, wouldn't you say, Mr. Ball???
Trammell has two twin boys, turning one-year old this August. Life is hectic for the True Blood star with babies and publicity tours and prep for season six...oops, did I say that? I did. And with confidence. Official renewal hasn't happened yet, but it's coming Truebies!
Sam Trammell is such a grounded guy, like the character he plays on TV. He's smart, sensitive and with a little spontaneous edge. I can see why he was cast in as Sam Merlotte; though Trammell seems relatively unassuming, there's an unpredictable nature he can't completely conceal that makes him feel both safe and dangerous at the same time.
Expect the AMAZING from Trammell and friends starting this Sunday, June 10th. It's going to be a long, HOT True Blood summer, y'all!
My very best wishes to you, Sam; it was wonderful seeing you this weekend! I hope you can finally get some sleep tomorrow...I know I will.
And a very special thank you to all the fans who stayed with me for FOUR crazy hours on Friday afternoon. you all are so much fun! Looking forward to seeing you next year....
