Best-selling CHEW-verse, comes from Rob Guillory. In case you've been living under a rock, CHEW is by John Layman and illustrated by Guillory; it focuses on a future without fowl. Yes, in the CHEW-verse, poultry is no longer legal. After the bird flu killed 23-million Americans, it was outlawed. And anytime something is outlawed, a black market develops. For CHEW, that black market includes cannabalistic chefs who substitute people for poultry and mad scientists who create Frickens, or Chogs--chicken-frogs--to help meet the needs of restaurants like Mother Cluckers, a KFC, minus the gentlemanly Colonel. But wait! I haven't even gotten to the best part. Tony Chu is the protagonist, an FDA agent who uses his supernatural "cibopath" powers to help solve crimes. What's a cibopath? A psychic who can see what happens to a person, or a fricken, by eating them. Yum.
Rob and I worked together in both Austin and New Orleans at the Wizard Cons, where Rob engaged the audience like a pro. He answered fan questions and helped aspiring artists learn from his experience.
Rob is a native of Louisiana, where he attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Rob Guillory got the CHEW gig in 2008...and the rest is history:
CHEW was nominated for a prestigious Harvey Award, as was Rob for Best New Artist; both Rob and CHEW went on to earn several Eagle Awards and two Eisners in 2010 and 2011. Rob has worked on several indies as well, including Teddy Scares and The Popgun Anthology.
So what's next? Looks like Layman and Guillory are a dynamic duo for now. As CHEW continues to earn accolades, Layman and Guillory are working on potential opportunities to branch out into animation. Guillory's art has a distinctive edge that makes CHEW quite a mouthful. So be sure to take small bites before you swallow CHEW whole. Unless, of course, you're more like CHEW's Russian Vampire, who doesn't bother eating people to engage his psychic abilities. He just drinks their blood.
No matter how you slice it (or sip it...), CHEW, and, Rob Guillory, have taken the comic-world by storm!
