So, that's me with Hollywood-icon, Michael Madsen, at left; the picture was taken at Madsen's request. And I was more than happy to oblige. Mr. Blonde is even more amazing in person! Madsen and I worked together at the Wizard World New Orleans Comic Con and he was AMAZING with his fans, doing lines for us from KILL BILL and RESERVOIR DOGS. Michael Madsen's a true movie star, and yes, I was definitely star-struck.
Though I love Madsen's many roles, one of my favorites was his stint on ESPN's TILT, which came out right before my book chapter, GIRLS ON TILT, appeared in POKER & PHILOSOPHY; I even referred to the opening scene of one of the first episodes in my chapter. Madsen's character is in a casino bathroom, looking in the mirror. If you paid close attention, you could see a small tuft of blonde hair at the bottom of the mirror--right about where Madsen's crotch was.
Yup. Fantastic stuff. Madsen was gracious, charismatic and charming--and very generous with his fans. It was hard not to get lost in Madsen's voice as he answered fan questions with uncanny honesty that made you love him all the more.
Madsen is the father of five children!!! Lucky kids! His fifteen-year old advised Madsen to take part in the Justin Bieber video where Madsen plays a disgruntled father. Footage of the video hit YouTube early and Madsen said he got an angry call from his sister, saying, "How could you beat up Justin Bieber? Don't you know how much your niece loves him???!!!" Of course, Michael Madsen's a lover not a fighter. In fact, he's even a poet! AMERICAN BADASS came out in 2009 on Madsen's birthday; his most recent publication came out in December 2012, EXPECTING RAIN. Dennis Hopper calls Madsen's poetry "better than Kerouac." And as a person with four degrees and nine years of literary study at my disposal, I have to agree.
I hope to see Madsen again at another Wizard World Con...and not just because he's a spiffy dresser. Check out that stunning Etro shirt and his half-donned leather jacket! Michael Madsen is a pleasure to work with; I was humbled by his graciousness and kind words. If the world saw me like Michael Madsen does, I'd be one lucky, lucky person. Meeting Madsen, whose poetry I've admired for years, and whose work on the silver screen has inspired for even longer, is about as lucky as any person can get in one lifetime. No sense being greedy.
