I couldn't have written a better movie myself. It was THAT good. I took three of my nephews, 13, 11 and 7, and everyone was laughing out loud, even me. Lots of unexpected surprises and sweet, funny moments, undoubtedly inserted by Robert Smigel, co-author of the film's screenplay and long-time SNL veteran. Smigel's father, Dr. Irwin Smigel, invented cosmetic dentistry; I use his SUPER SMILE toothpaste daily, as do many celebs, like Kelly Ripa.
Smigel's cohort was British comedy-writer, Peter Baynham, known for his work on films like BORAT. And with a cast of voice actors that included Kevin James, Selena Gomez, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon, Andy Samberg, Fran Drescher, David Spade, and Cee Lo Green--the entertainment factor was high...very high.
The storyline mimicked the original Gothic themes of 19th century novels like FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA, where the monsters are more humane than the humans around them. Adam Sandler's Count is an overprotective father after his young wife was murdered by a human mob. He builds HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA as a safe haven for his now motherless daughter, Mavis, and, for all the monsters out there hunted by humans...werewolves, mummies, the invisible man, big foot, zombies, you name it, and it's in there. Fans of supernatural creatures big and small will revel in HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA's fun twist on the interior lives of our favorite movie-monsters. The real fun begins when a human stumbles into this monster-mash of goodness....
HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA is #PopCultureProfessor APPROVED with a well-deserved 10/10 on the Housel-scale! You know what that means...it's time to start working on a HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2!!!
