Mark and I worked together in New Orleans at the Wizard World Comic Con, where Mark took an hour away from Artists' Alley to sit with a small group of hopeful artists and talk the vast world of comic book art. Mark was great at answering questions about not only his own experience but how people wanting to break in to the business can get their start.
Mark got his when Ms. Honest suggested he study at Manhattan's High School of Art and Design. By the time Mark graduated, his art was so widely recognized, he earned the Presidential Scholarship to the School of Visual Arts. It wasn't long until Hollywood came calling.
Mark's artwork has been featured in Marvel films (and DVD extras) for both Ghost Rider and Wolverine Origins, but some of his earliest work was with DC on storylines like Swamp Thing, Ghosts, and Jonah Hex. Mark's art-credits are so long, they'd require their own article! But let's just say his work covers an array of fan-favorites, including Thor, X-Men, Wolverine, Conan the Barbarian, Hercules, Vampirella, Tomb Raider, The Hulk, Spider-Man, and Punisher. I mean, the man's a god. Like Thor, but real.
Most recently, Mark Texeira has worked on Punisher: Nightmare for Marvel...and it ROCKS! As the #PopCultureProfessor, I get to work with lots of great comic book talent and have seen a tremendous amount of artwork. But there's something different about Mark's illustrations. Maybe it has to do with his use of live models. Or how he applies sepias. Perhaps it's the very thin layer of acrylics he puts over the original underpainting. I'm not quite sure. But I can say that Mark Texeira is one of the best I've seen. And I hope to see Mark Texeira's artwork in my favorite comic books from Marvel for many years to come.
Mark Texeira, you are most definitely #PopCultureProfessor APPROVED!
